Keys for Singing the Prophetic New Song of the Lord

By Joshua Mills

“So what shall I do? I will pray with my spirit, but I will also pray with my mind; I will sing with my spirit, but I will also sing with my mind.” (1 Corinthians 14:15)

1. Develop A Simple Chord Progression. If you play an instrument, play this chord progression over and over again. After a while, begin humming along with the melody. Allow your spirit-man to connect with the sound of the music, and begin singing from your heart. This is not difficult. Do not try to overcomplicate things. Oftentimes I've discovered that these simple chord progressions will come almost "naturally" as you begin to move into deeper realms of worship.  You may need to start with a song that is familiar to you, but as you begin to connect, there will be a sound that begins to rise to take you further into this spiritual experience.  Don't be afraid to express your feelings towards Jesus Christ for His goodness and His saving power.  Don't be afraid to worship beyond words... sometimes it will be sounds from within (the scriptures speak about this "groaning of the spirit")... other times it will be a heavenly tongue.

2. Sing In The Spirit. When you first begin singing the new song, one of the easiest ways to start is by simply singing in your heavenly language. This is what the bible calls “singing in the spirit.” If you want to know how to receive this supernatural language, I would encourage you to read my book “Simple Supernatural” as it outlines the scriptural precedent and gives you practical keys for receiving this wonderful gift from God. Many times you will find that as you beginning singing in the spirit, words and new songs in your natural language will follow! You begin in the Spirit... singing in this way... being led by the Spirit into new sounds and songs... rhythms... and musical movements... but then it begins to stir within you... you begin to get "natural words" in your spirit... ideas... thoughts... I would like to call them "God-ideas" and "God-thoughts".  Oftentimes these are so simple, you may feel as though it's too amateur.  Don't be afraid to release what God is giving you.  As you take a step of faith to release what he's put in your mouth, He will give you more.

3. Sing With Understanding. The bible also tells us that we can “sing with understanding.” So another great way you can begin singing the new song is by picking up your bible and singing directly from the scriptures. Let it become your song! I would encourage you to sing from the book of Psalms. This is a good place to start since the Psalms is a songbook of worshipful adoration towards God. Psalms is the songbook of the earth, while Revelations is the songbook of heaven.  Either one will encourage you in this spiritual journey of worship exploration. You can also sing directly from your heart and this is one of the most powerful ways to connect with what God is releasing in and through you.  When you can connect with what God is doing in an atmosphere, and begin to give voice to it, you will discover that the Lord begins to move upon you.  You will sense a touch of Glory on that moment.  He's waiting for people to recognize, discern and vocalize what the Spirit is doing in order to breathe life and manifest His presence in a natural and tangible way.  Many times I've begun to sing prophetically over entire church congregations... singing the prophetic NOW word for them... and at that moment things begin to break open in the Spirit.  There's a spiritual connection that happens.  The same is true over Nations and specific geographical locations where the Lord has assigned us to go and release His sound.  As we sing there is a supernatural shift.  Things begin coming into alignment with heaven's purposes, promises and plans.  Begin practicing these keys... and see what the Lord will do through you as you begin to sing the new song..!
